Sed

By way of synonyms of saudade, I am searching for a word to identify an emotion that I cannot name in English. So far, it has only been evoked in me by certain Valentino gowns. The emotion is unique and powerful, and suddenly I fear that it is what will tell me I am falling in love, the next time I fall in love.

Also poignant is aware, or mono no aware, a Japanese term that literally means "the pathos of things", and speaks to a refined sensitivity toward the sorrowful and transient nature of beauty. Mono no aware is about the hidden corners of things, the deeper meanings, not the superficial reactions we might have to something that affects us. A mono no aware event is not sentimental or symbolic, but rather a true feeling, a rare moment when thoughts and feelings become fully formed.

Such is the pathos of Valentino.
